Annotation -
The aim of this course is to enhance theoretical knowledge of general microbiology and expanding knowledge toward clinical microbiology, the etiology of infectious diseases, infectious diseases complications and real epidemiological situations. The purpose of the seminar is to directly see and analyze bacteria in biological materials from patients and distinguish genuine infectious agents from mere colonization or normal flora. The course should teach students how to evaluate the severity of the findings of pathogenic bacteria, and how to determine patient's diagnosis and treatment. Students get a complete picture of the microbiological diagnosis, which is a basic tool for the direction of anti-infective therapy.

Aim of the course -

Students will be able to:

Work in a clinical microbiology lab environment

Identify the most important selected representatives of human pathogenic and facultative pathogenic microorganisms by several diagnostic methods

Use the acquired knowledge for practical work as experts in clinical microbiology laboratories.

Syllabus -

Practical course of hygienic and clinical microbiology is taught in a form of practical laboratory directly in a hospital clinical microbiology lab and is terminated by the exam. Students will be familiar with the department of clinical microbiology and its divisions in relation to other clinical workplaces in a hospital, with operation department, the principles of safety in the laboratory and particular microbiological laboratory work within the hospital. Students will observe ways of collecting of biological material for examination, its further treatment, followed by the isolation of pathogenic and potentially pathogenic infectious agents, their identification, antibiotic susceptibility testing and subsequent conclusion of the results along with their proper interpretation to clinicians. Students will follow the whole diagnostic process also in microbiological information system, which will be presented to them. They will learn the principles of preparation of culture media, and will revise the principles of light microscopy. Doctors - microbiologists will practically show to students the individual steps in the proper microbiological diagnostics. When evaluating the findings in real biological materials students will practice their skills of the identification of Gram plus and minus groups of bacteria, aerobes and anaerobes. The internship will also issue mycobacterial and molecular biology matters.
