The course presents an introduction to calculations common in following courses of Chemistry, Laboratories, Chemical Engineering etc. The discussed toppics will include: system of quantities and units, relations between different quantities (e. g., quantification of mixture composition), applications of Ideal Gas Law, and elementary material balances (including mixture preparation, crystallization and simple systems with chemical reactions).

• to express amount, composition and other properties of a system using basic SI and other units,
• to derive, rearrange and solve equations based on definitions and selected laws
• to derive and solve material balance equations for simple systems without and with chemical reactions

2. Different ways of description of composition. Chemical formulae. Composition of compounds. Mixtures and their composition.

3. Ideal gas law. Ideal mixture of gases.

4. Stoichiometric calculations. Conversion, yield, excess.

5. Selected problems.

6. Test 1.

7. Basis of material balances. Material balances without a chemical reaction. Balance scheme. Balance matrix. Streams and components.

8. Crystallization. Saturated solutions.

9. Selected problems.

11. Balances with chemical reactions. Source term, fictitious streams.

12. Complex balance problems. Systems with consecutive and parallel reactions.
