Business English 1a is designed to prepare students to use English in the present and future work situations, especially in the international labour market. Students will develop professional English skills with a focus on specific business contexts and environments. They will learn lexis that is used regularly in the world of international business and impacts intercultural communication. The course will help practice and enrich communication skills, encourage students to use word partnerships, a wide variety of grammar functions in different modes, read texts critically, and widen their experience. The topics include brand management, business travel and meeting management, etc. Language functions focus on planning arrangements, chairing a meeting/debate, requesting and complaining.
Knowledge will be transferred through speaking practice, fortifying exercises, role-plays as well as listening and reading comprehension, case studies and short pieces of business-oriented writing.
Course objectives
Students will be able to:
• Develop skills to deal with people in business situations
• Increase their knowledge of key business concepts worldwide
• Write and read business agendas, e-mails, memos, minutes and reports
• Expand vocabulary related to professional business situations
• Express business concepts by reformulating them in their own words while summarising
• Identify differences and similarities between doing business in Europe and in other countries
• Develop understanding of how culture impacts dealings in the business environment.

Assessment details The Course Portfolio consists of two main sections: a) tasks completed throughout the semester based on teacher’s instructions, and b) a short test. a) Tasks completed throughout the semester include: 1) An individual video presentation, “Presenting Yourself and attending meetings”, based on the coursebook. 2) A team presentation, “Presenting the results of any Case study”, based on the coursebook. 3) Blog 4) A student-created business vocabulary patterns in complex business-oriented sentences. b) a short test
