Annotation -
Learning outcomes of the course unit The course is focused on the practical mastering of the basic chemico-engineering calculations necessary for the completion of laboratory exercises and other follow-up courses. Its contents include calculations based on the stoichiometry of chemical reactions (quantity of reactants and products), expression and recalculation of mixtures composition, calculations based on the state equation of ideal gas and material balance of simple processes (separator, mixer, etc.).

Aim of the course -

Students will be able to:

  • use and convert values of quantities in SI units,
  • various formulations of compounds and mixtures and their recalculations,
  • stoichiometric calculations (quantity of reactants / products) including application of conversion, yield or loss,
  • material balances of simple single-stage processes (mixer, separator) and multistage (solution preparation + concentration adjustment, etc.).

Syllabus -

1. Basic physical and chemical quantities. Units, dimensions, recalculations. Counting with inaccurate values.

2. Mixtures and expression of their composition; various expressions of composition and reciprocal recalculations.

3. Composition of the compounds, determination of the stoichiometric formula from the composition, mass fraction of the element in the mixture of compounds.

4. Equation of the ideal gas. Ideal blend of ideal gases. Partial pressure, partial volume.

5. Simple stoichiometric calculations. Key component definition, yield, conversion, surplus.

6. Stochiometric calculations - solving more complex problems (multiple reactions of concurrent or sequential reactions, different reactant / product states, etc.).

7. Stoichiometric calculations - practicing selected tasks.

8. Test 1.

9. Fundamentals of material balances without chemical reaction. Balance Sheet, Streams and Folders. Input matrix. Solving simple balance problems (solution mixing, separator, etc.). Balance equations and additional relationships.

10. Balance of multi-phase systems. Saturated solutions. Crystallization free. Yield.

11. Balance of multiphase systems. Discontinued crystallisation including preparation of the starting solution.

12. Balance of more complex systems (multiple nodes, simple divider and simple mixer, balance without specified calculation basis, recycle).

13. Balance of More Complex Systems - Practice and Discussion of Selected Tasks.
