The course introduces the subject of soil and groundwater pollution from a wide range of sources and examine the mobility of contaminant constituents in the subsurface. Different remediation technologies and strategies to overcome the resultant environmental problems will be examined in relation to degraded urban, agricultural and industrial landscapes.

Grading Policy:
Percentage contributions to the final grade are as follows: Homework Assignments, 20% Team Project (Team Project Paper, 20%; Team Project Presentation, 20%) Written Exam, 40%
Homework Assignments: Students will be assigned 2 problem sets. Problem sets are due as noted in the lecture schedule.
Team Project: Students will be grouped into teams of 3-4 students to work jointly on a project to investigate a soil/groundwater contaminant for which there is reason for concern about possible adverse health effects for human populations and propose its remediation.
There will be individual meetings offered throughout the term. Each project team must schedule at least two meetings with the teacher to discuss the progress on their project. In addition, the teacher will answer questions relating to the lecture material, homework assignments (noted in the lecture schedule) and projects and will also provide background help with concepts in environmental remediation.
Written Exam: To complete the course students, have to pass written exam with minimum score of 50%.

On successful completion of the course students will be able to: 1. Understand processes that affect the fate of contaminants in the subsurface 2. Understand many of the basic concepts of contamination and the effects of environmental contamination on human health and environment 3. Summarise remediation methods used at contaminated sites 4. Determine if the remediation methods are safe 5. Explain why the remediation methods should be used Poslední úprava: McGachy Lenka (12.01.2022)
